Rembrandt Value/Form Study

This took me longer than I care to admit but I'm learning and that's what's important. Slowly but surely learning.

Color practice

So this was a painting exercise I gave myself mostly to see how well and how quickly I could match color and light from an image. I estimate I spent around an hour or so on this drawing. The challenge I gave myself was to not ever sample color from the original photo and simply see how well I could match with just my own eye, also I painted my version entirely on one layer to keep the challenge pure and not using any cheats.

After stepping back and exiting "the zone" I can easily see what I need to work on in terms of training my eye. The biggest things I noticed were:
-Overall I tend to shift hues way too much towards yellow
-I get muddy with my colors rather than keeping them simple and pure
-I soften the light too much and shy away from hard terminators
-I also seem too shy away from heavy saturation and also dark darks and bright whites

With these issues in mind I will work on another photo referenced one hour color study and see how much I can improve. Stay tuned guys!

Project 4- Non-Standard Shading

I really wanted to get an interesting mix of 2D and 3D here so I incorporated image projections with cell shaders to get the aesthetic I was going for. Though cell shading is still very very new to me, the idea still interests me. As I experiment with it I would like to see the different directions I could take it in. At this point I'm beginning to consider non-standard shading for my senior film.

As far as this image goes, I feel happy with it overall but I will be testing a few things out to see if I can get better results. Mostly the procedural granite is what's bugging me. I'm going to try to replace it for the most part with grain images of my own. Also I want to try playing with saturation just a tad more. Honestly, this image could change quite a bit but I'll post anything new that happens. Stay tuned!

Also, here's some awesome style inspiration I've found.

First Lighting Project

These are my final renders for my first lighting project. One with high visual tension and the other with low visual tension. We were not allowed to use colors or texture materials on the models though we could alter the values. I'm going to experiment a little bit more with the high tension scene just to see what else I can do. With the low visual scene I'm going to do an edit this weekend to soften lights and get rid of the hotspots.
